Stock up on firewood, wood pellets, coal and fire starters to keep your wood fire or pellet burner running efficiently through winter. Dry, well-seasoned wood (under 20 percent moisture content) burns hotter, produces less smoke and helps your flue stay cleaner. Choose the right fuel for your heater: wood fires need dry split firewood, while pellet burners use specifically manufactured wood pellets.
Dry, well-seasoned hardwoods like manuka, gum and macrocarpa burn hotter and longer than softwoods, making them the best choice for overnight burning. Softwoods like pine light easily and heat up the firebox quickly, so use them for kindling or to get the fire established. Never burn treated, painted or driftwood, which releases toxic gases and damages the flue.
A typical New Zealand household that uses a wood fire most evenings through winter needs around 4 to 6 cubic metres of firewood. Heavier users who run the fire all day may need 8 to 10 cubic metres. Order firewood in summer or early autumn so it has time to dry further before winter, and store it off the ground under cover with plenty of airflow.
