Micathermic heaters use thin mica panels to combine convection and radiant heat in a slim, lightweight body. They warm a room faster than a traditional oil column heater, run silently and take up less floor space. Features to compare include wattage (usually 2,000W to 2,400W), number of heat settings, thermostat, timer, tip-over switch and whether the heater can be wall-mounted.
A micathermic heater uses mica (a naturally occurring mineral) around a heating element to radiate warmth quickly and evenly. Because there is no oil to warm up, it reaches full heat in under a minute. Mica panels release both radiant heat (warming people and objects) and convected heat (warming air), giving faster room warm-up than oil column heaters.
Micathermic heaters are generally safe with modern features like tip-over switches, overheat protection and cool-touch housings. The front panel does get hot, so keep the heater at least 1m from curtains, bedding and furniture, and never cover it. Wall-mounting keeps children and pets clear. They are a reasonable choice for bedrooms provided you follow the manufacturer's clearance guidelines.
